Prepare backpacks for students in need. We one shift at 4 pm and we pack until done. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour and a half. It's an easy service project for people of all ages. We meet at the church house located behind the main building at Evergreen Lutheran Church (come to the basement door). Groups can contact us through this form to serve together.
We have several schools who participate in our on campus pantry program. We can provide quick meals for breakfast and lunch, snacks and take home meals if needed. Pantry food is packed on Monday and needs delivered on Tuesday to each school. Food will need put away and the empty bin returned to MBP so we can repeat on a weekly basis. Pantries are open to any student with any emergency need. No qualifications or limit to use. If a child has the means to "take and replace" we encourage it. Students might need a snack before a big test or they may need something before an after school activity. Another student may depend on it daily for lunch. The goal of having a food pantry is to make each campus hunger free. Plan on one hour of your time and some light lifting is required. Contact Shelley Harmon with questions via this form.
Two PACKING LEADERS are needed every Wednesday to oversee volunteers. This is a great opportunity for adults and high school students to not only gain volunteer hours but also leadership skills. We will provide a training before you start. Call Shelley Harmon by filling out this form.
Volunteers pick up and drop off backpacks to our participating schools on Thursday morning between 9 and 11 am. Backpacks are stored at the church house and can be picked up Wednesday after packing or Thursday before school. This job also requires rounding up our empty bags and snack bins and returning them to the church house to be refilled. Contact us through this form for questions or use the sign up link for backpack delivery.
Food Drives/Collection - If your group or organization would like to hold a food drive on behalf of Mountain Backpacks please contact Shelley Harmon through this form. Food Drives can be scheduled at any local store on a Saturday or Sunday . You need a minimum of 3, max of 6 people for each 2 hour shift. If young children are collecting 1 adult must be present. This is a great service project for church groups, school clubs and sports teams. If you would like to hold a food collection we can provide collection bins and promotional material. Contact Shelley Harmon (Program Director) to schedule a drive. This year we will be weighing all our food donations and posting pounds. This is a great way to directly help kids in need.
